Kevin Crehan: An Bhábóg sa Bhádóg, Music from West Clare |
|
(J.A. Records, JACD 0100, P.O. Box 15914, Cincinnati, OH 45215) Kevin Crehan is the grandson of Junior Crehan, the famous West Clare fiddler. This, his first release, is an album of solo fiddle playing, and pays homage to the great memory of his grandfather, whose spirit is evident throughout. An Bhábóg sa Bhádóg is the closest thing we’ll ever have to a full recording of Junior, and so should be of great interest to the traditionally minded. Kevin plays seventeen of Junior’s compositions, and consulted with Junior before his death about how the album should be laid out, and which tunes should be put together. Kevin’s playing is lovely. He plays dance tunes with great lift and clarity, and his airs are deep and low and sad. One of the things that made Junior’s playing so wonderful was the deep emotion he brought to it, and his ability to take you elsewhere. The same holds true of Kevin’s music; he transports you to a slower time, people gathered at a house dance amidst the “rain-soaked, wind-harangued bleakness of West Clare.” Lovely stuff altogether. |
