John Canny, Kevin Carey, Terence O’Reilly: Suantraí

(SUANCD001)

The opening track of the album begins with a lovely, relaxed version of The Dairy Maid  in the key of C, letting you know what you are in for from the start. Suantraí is Irish for the “music of repose”, one of three ancient categories of music, and the three musicians here—Canny on button accordion, Carey on fiddle, and O’Reilly on guitar— hold true to their chosen name, playing sweet, unhurried music drawn mostly from the terrain of east Clare and east Galway. Canny and Carey blend well, suggesting that they’ve spent a lot of time playing together, and O’Reilly’s accompaniment is understated and appropriate. O’Reilly also contributes two songs, and though his singing is not as polished as his guitar work, it is sincere and the songs create a nice texture for the album. Lovely pure-drop music all in all.
