Liz and Yvonne Kane: The Well-Tempered Bow

(DAWROS Music DM001, This link opens in a new windowwww.thekanesisters.com)

The Kane sisters are two young women from Galway who play in an old way. They are accompanied by John Blake, who seems to be everywhere these days, and on one track by Jesse Smith (of Danu fame) on viola. Fans of Paddy Fahey’s distinctive compositions will find the album a boon; seven of Fahey’s tunes are recorded and the sisters list Fahey as one of their main influences, heard in the slower tempos and the penchant for the moodier, modal settings of tunes.

The sisters play in unison and with incredible tightness, so much so that you can hardly tell there are two fiddles playing. And, also to the good, the fiddling is always the focus, with Blake’s accompaniment taking the appropriate back-seat role. My one carp is that the tone of the fiddles is a bit thin, certainly for the richness one would expect for having the two of them together. Very solid.
